Mrs. Mellus' math curriculum

Hi fellow alumni of Mrs. Mellus - I thought of our infamous math teacher the other day.  As a special needs teacher, I spend a lot of time working inclusively in a Grade 3 classroom.  The other day, they were doing a holiday math activity that required them to plot points on a graph.  The connected points formed a Christmas Tree.

I am mentioning this for two reasons.  It brought back memories of the many papers that many of us did in our 8th grade math class.  I remember making a Thanksgiving turkey among other things.  Also, the activity is just one example of how education has changed since we were in school.  I am always noting specific curriculum items that my second and third graders are asked to do that I remember doing years later.

Happy Holidays!

Boy do I remember her. They fondly called her piano legs! I always remember making those spirals or whatever the technical geometry term . Remembering too that you wanted it to look awesome and like stain glass. Then it would make you famous & get posted on the wall. She would brag to the next class what an awesome job that student did the pervious year. I recall my dear friend Wendy Elizabeth Mason always making fun of her and how many kids were afraid of her too.

Can you imagine what we would do if any of our kids had a teacher like Mrs. Mellus?

I'll bet every one of us can still correctly recite the Pythagorian Theorem.

I can remember the subject not the details! I may have cheated off of Wendy Mason's paper ! LOL Only kidding. Mellus was too scarey to cheat in her class.
